QuitWorks links patients who want to quit smoking to the full range of the state's tobacco treatment services. All it takes to use QuitWorks are a clinician, a patient who uses tobacco, and the QuitWorks tools.

How QuitWorks works
Using a simple referral process, any physician, nurse, or other clinician in a small practice or a large practice, health center, or hospital can easily and quickly refer any patient who uses tobacco, regardless of the patient’s health insurance status. The referral forms are faxed or electronically transmitted to the Massachusetts Smokers' Helpline, the state-funded QuitWorks service provider.

When the QuitWorks Resource Center receives the referral form, a counselor calls the patient, completes a patient assessment, and offers the patient the state's free, proven-effective stop-smoking services. Every referring provider will receive reports about their patients. Within 1 month a patient contact report is sent to confirm contact with the patient and services accepted. About 6 months after the initial assessment, QuitWorks calls the patient to assess his or her smoking status and sends the provider a patient outcome report.

QuitWorks Operations Standards

  1. QuitWorks staff check receipt of faxed referral forms multiple times daily on a prescribed schedule, review them for accuracy, and enter them into a web-based database within 1 day.
  2. Patients receive a call from QuitWorks within 3 business days of fax receipt.  Up to five calls-back will be made to reach patients within 12 business days. Although QuitWorks makes five attempts to reach patients referred, typically 50% to 60% of referred patients respond to calls.  It is not unusual for tobacco users to change their mind about quitting or using the QuitWorks service, once they leave their clinician's office. Thus, QuitWorks recommend that providers re-refer patients in QuitWorks as often as necessary.
  3. Providers receive a patient contact report on QuitWorks contact with each patient within 2 to 3 weeks (to allow time for five calls-back), and no later than 4 weeks from receipt of the referral form.
