QuitWorks Counseling Services

The QuitWorks tobacco treatment counseling services are based on Social Learning Theory and use motivational interviewing techniques and cognitive behavioral strategies.  Counselors teach patients that smoking is a learned behavior and can be unlearned.  Counselors also help patients increase self-efficacy and self-regulation.

The first counseling call is the most comprehensive session and takes about 45 minutes to complete. The focus of this call is on preparing smokers to quit, developing a quit plan, and setting a quit date. Counselors also use motivational interviewing to help boost patients’ desire to change and help resolve ambivalence around quitting smoking.

The second session supports smokers on their Quit Day and with their Quit Plan.

The four follow-up sessions last about 10 to 15 minutes each and focus on relapse prevention and helping patients with strategies they can use every day to stay quit. All sessions are scheduled based on patient interest and availability.
